On June 12th, a milestone was passed as the groundbreaking ceremony for BECCS Stockholm took place.

“A groundbreaking for the future, the climate, and coming generations.” These words were engraved on the shovels used today as the first sods were turned for what will become one of the world’s largest carbon capture and storage facilities.

“This marks the beginning of something that could evolve into an entirely new and competitive industry for Sweden and the Nordic region,” said Stockholm Exergi CEO Anders Egelrud in a statement.

Participating in the ceremony were EU Commissioner Wopke Hoekstra; Sweden’s Minister for Climate and the Environment, Romina Pourmokhtari; Stockholm’s Finance Commissioner Karin Wanngård; Microsoft Sweden’s CEO Sophia Wikander; and Stockholm Exergi’s CEO Anders Egelrud.

“It’s been six years since we launched our pilot project to explore the feasibility of capturing carbon dioxide at the Värtan combined heat and power plant. Many have worked hard to get us to this point – not just here at Stockholm Exergi. Without the political will and support from Stockholm, the Swedish government, the EU, and private companies like Microsoft, we would never have come this far,” Egelrud concluded.
