Since 2019, a small research facility has been connected to the Värtan CHP plant. The goal is that the tests carried out in the plant, together with studies, will provide sufficiently robust results to form the basis for Stockholm Exergi to invest in a large-scale plant that is expected to be in operation as early as 2026.

Since the carbon capture technology is proven, the operation of the research facility is about evaluating and adapting the bio-CCS technology for the Värtan CHP plant. A large number of tests are carried out, mostly in-house, but KTH is also involved.
